I KNOW WHAT THAT IS
(That’s A .....)

By John Furse

Version 1

The Cast is:-
Joe Morgan – Pete Fletcher – Mavis Laine – George Elworthy – Davie Martin – Granny Riddle – Pat Thompson – Freda Hardacre – Freda Hardcastle – Jimmy Riddle

Plot:-
Due to “a minor clerical error” an expensive, experimental machine is dispatch to various addresses in England when it should have been sent to America. Eventually it ends up in Giggle-Beauchamp-On-Birtle, a tiny, remote country town way out in the “sticks” and known locally as Gigglesham. When it arrives at the sub-post office it is treated with a lot speculation as to what it is and no small degree of suspicion. The postmistress Mavis Laine and her hypochondriac postman try to place the machine with varying organisation around the town; all denying any knowledge of it. Freda Hardcastle is sent from the organization that made the machine to retrieve it, liaising with a local representative, the inept James Riddle. At the same time Freda Hardacre arrives from Post Office headquarters to make an assessment of Gigglesham’s sub-post office efficiency. The similarity of names leads to the inevitable confusion as to who’s who and what’s what. Mavis’s world descends into chaos as she tries to find a home for the machine and present an efficient image to Freda Hardacre whilst at the same time trying to deal with the motley collection of characters that have varying needs for the post office. There is Davie Martin, skint as usual, trying to get a pension advance, and his friend farmer George Elworthy. And there is Polly Riddle, James’ aged grandmother, who is always looking for someone to gossip with when she not looking for a new husband, much to the horror of Davie.

The above version of I Know What That Is was successfully produced and presented by The Monkton Players on 25th to 27th October 2012. Although the Players were happy with the production, I was not happy with the script and feel that it needs to be completely rewritten and have therefore decided not to publish this version.
